Presentation Learning Objectives:

1. Describe pediatric obesity.

2. Discuss prevalence of weight stigma in healthcare.

3. Identify ways to eliminate weight stigma in your practice.

Presenter:

Dr. Bob Siegel, MD

Dr. Bob Siegel is a pediatrician who specializes in pediatric obesity treatment and prevention. He was drawn to this work because of the great need in the community, and  chose pediatrics because he loves working with children and young adults. In practice, Bob uses an individualized approach with each child and family. He is the director of the Center for Better Health and Nutrition and supports family-centered method that focuses on helping children and their families live a healthier lifestyle. Dr. Siegel has been a general pediatrician for more than 20 years before moving to obesity work and he was honored to join the board of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. In addition to helping patients and families, he is involved in research and their team is examining better ways to treat and prevent obesity. In his spare time, he enjoys being with his family, running and playing with his dog and cats. 

Alison Wheeler, MS, RD, LD

Alison Wheeler is a Registered Dietitian in the Center for Better Health and Nutrition (CBHN), HealthWorks! at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Alison worked in clinical research for 10 years and had the opportunity to support the research being done in the CBHN. During this time, she made the decision to go back to school to become a dietitian. Alison obtained her Master’s in Nutrition Sciences and completed her dietetic internship through the University of Cincinnati. Alison was drawn to working in weight management, especially in the pediatric setting, as a way to connect not only with patients but their families too. Alison enjoys providing patient and family-centered care and connecting with families to identify goals that can support a healthy lifestyle. Outside of work, Alison enjoys spending time with her family and cheering on Cincinnati sports teams.
