Probiotics in the Real World

Presentation Learning Objectives:

1. Review the microbiota in health and obesity

2. Assess how dietary composition and calorie intake regulate the microbiota

3. Discuss mechanism of action of probiotics

4. Discuss the effects of microbiota on complications of obesity, such as metabolic syndrome

5. Establish indications of appropriate probiotic use

   Presenters:

Dr. Marialena Mouzaki is a Pediatric Gastroenterologist in the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. She is the Clinical Director of Nutrition at CCHMC and an Associate Professor at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Mouzaki received her MD from the Medical School of Athens, Greece and then went on to do her Residency Training in General Pediatrics at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Pennsylvania. She completed her Fellowship Training in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at the Hospital for Sick Children and obtained a Masters in Science from the Institute of Medical Sciences at the University of Toronto.

Her research interests include non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and in particular the role of the intestinal microbiota in the development of NAFLD.

 

Emily Vale RD, LD currently works in the outpatient Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition clinic at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital (CCHMC) where she consults for patients with a variety of GI issues/diseases.  Emily completed her bachelor’s degree in Dietetics at Miami University (OH) followed by a distance internship through Bowling Green State University (OH), where she organized her rotations in Cincinnati, OH.  Prior to Emily’s current position, she worked as a stand by RD at Cincinnati Children’s, covering a variety of outpatient clinics including Complex Care, Oncology, Neuromuscular, among others.  Over the past five years as a dietitian, Emily has authored blog posts for the CCHMC website, was recently published in an article regarding Iodine Deficiency in the TPN-dependent child and participates in various community events including Cincinnati Children’s IBD Education Day and events for the Gluten Free for Cincinnati organization.   

 

Leah Barron, RD CNSC LD works in the department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. She completed her undergraduate degree at Eastern Kentucky University, and her dietetic internship at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. Leah spent her first 2 years as a dietitian working in oncology and community nutrition at Margaret Mary Health in Batesville, IN. After coming to Children’s in 2013, Leah obtained her CNSC and provides nutrition therapy for patients with conditions including short bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, NAFLD/NASH and celiac disease. Leah has served on the education council at Children’s and presented for various organizations including the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America and the Infusion Nurses Society.
