Presentation Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the complexity of sustainable food systems, including the health, economics, societal and environmental dimensions
  2. Recognize systems-level approaches to promote healthy and sustainable food systems in the workplace and community
  3. Identify credible programs and incorporate simple strategies to manage foodprints and support healthy, environmentally conscious lifestyles.


Karen Bakies, RDN, LD, FAND 

Vice President, Nutrition Affairs, American Dairy Association Mideast

Karen Bakies serves as Vice President of Nutrition Affairs for the American Dairy Association Mideast, working on behalf of dairy farm families in Ohio and West Virginia. In this role, Bakies oversees statewide partnerships and serves as a resource for health professionals, consumer leaders, media and the dairy community. As a registered and licensed dietitian and a Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics, Bakies uses her nutrition expertise to provide food, nutrition and sustainability knowledge, as well as dairy research, to a variety of audiences from academia and schools to state-wide associations and coalitions. Bakies has been with the American Dairy Association Mideast for the past 31 years and has been involved as a leader at the local, state and national level. She is the former president and delegate of the Ohio Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and chairperson for Nutrition Education for the Public, DPG and currently serves as their delegate. She has been acknowledged by the Ohio Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics with the Member Merit Award and the President’s Award. In 2018, she was granted the Outstanding Member Award by Nutrition Education for the Public. Bakies has a degree in dietetics from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and completed her dietetic internship in St. Paul, Minnesota.
